This unit provides an introduction to the South Saami language, a language spoken by an indigenous minority of Norway and Sweden. The unit presents an overview of the language itself. It also gives information of the historical and cultural background as well as the current situation for the South Saami, which is essential to understand not only the significance of the language, but also the development of the legal rights. Particular attention is given to the educational aspects and legal rights of the Saami minorities. 

The unit is aimed at teachers and pupils seeking knowledge on the variety of languages, the challenges of endangered languages, and of the situation of indigenous peoples and their cultures. It is structured in four main chapters, each offering a mixture of information and exercises.
