7 Who uses South Saami?

Today the South Saami language group is growing in strength and numbers. There is a rise not least among the young, especially from the designated South Saami administrative districts. However, modern online teaching courses attract pupils from all over the country in numbers small as yet, but rising.

Use of South Saami language has often been carried and conserved among the reindeer herding families/units (South Saami: sijteh). Many of the key political figures who have stood in the forefront of the fight for Saami recognition and rights have stemmed from such environments in Southern Saepmie.

The South Saami political activist Elsa Laula Renberg (1877-1931). A reindeer herder, midwife and author of political texts, she became a leading figure in Saami politics. This photo, probably taken ca. 1916, is from the archive of Saemien sijte and found on Wikimedia Commons.
