Olūti / Sources

  • Pop and schlager music started to be sung in Latgalian in the 1990s. Known artists and groups are Aija Rimša, Latgales dāmu pops, Laimas muzykanti, and others.
  • Since the beginning of the 21st century, musical activities have significantly increased in number and diversity, connecting music with new words. A mile-stone was the publication of the CD „Latgolys radejis izlase”, a collection of songs in Latgalian in 2007 which provided an overview of music genres and artists. Many popular groups such as Borowa MC, Bez PVN, and Dabasu durovys helped to create a Latgalian music scene for the young generation. Ever more young people sing and write music Latgalian, and use the language naturally among themselves, including, for instance, in social media.
  • Folk and schlager are the most popular genres in Latgalian in broader parts of the population. As there was no norm of Latgalian until the 1920s, the first collections of folklore texts were written in many different ways. Today, folklore groups use texts and musical traditions from earlier times. Among the most reknown are Biruta Ozoliņa and the groups Laimys muzykanti, Iļža, Rikši, Egle, and Upīte, whereas the group Tautumeitas is one of the most popular groups all over Latvia.
  • Two albums are of particular interest for getting acquainted with Latgalian music: “As ar čiuļim nadancoju!” (“I will not dance with people from other parts of Latvia”, 2007) and “Celīs, bruoļ!” (“Get up, brother”, 2017). Both were published by the association “Latgalīšu Producentu grupa” (“Group of Latgalian Producers”).
